Wood Shelves
83Introduction
If you are looking for a way to make some extra storage space in your room, and you want it to be good looking and strong, then wood shelves are one of the best ways you can go. Wood shelving really is one of the best options you'll find for most homes. You can construct a strong and sturdy wood shelf with really beautiful elegant wood, or just the scraps left over in the garage. You can throw it together in an afternoon, or you can spend several weeks building it, staining it, and shaping it into exactly what you want.
In this Hub I'm going to take a look at different kinds of wooden shelves for walls, to give you an idea of what's available, and what's possible to add into your own home.
Wood Shelves
Wood Shelving
Wood shelving is some of the oldest furniture to date. People have been building furniture from wood for hundreds, even thousands of years, and wood is probably still the best material for the job. You can shape it, carve it, bend it, and work it in hundreds of different ways. There are woods that are beautiful, heavy, and make for a fantastic impression, but are expensive. At the same time, some woods are cheap and not nearly as valued, and so don't cost nearly as much. Depending on your usage, you can choose one or the other, of course.
Wood Wall Shelves
Wood wall shelves, as the name suggests, fasten directly to the wall. They can be fancy and decorative, or very utilitarian, in the garage or closet. Either way, they aren't hard to get up, and will really prove to be worth the effort once you get them set up.
A common style I've seen for decorative wood shelves is to make cubes out of the wood. A total of four sides, all attached to the wall, with something inside the cube, or on top, or some combination thereof. There's something simple and beautiful about the shape, and you can use it as a base for a decoration or even a scene. What if you put a plant on top with a vine hanging down, and then had a cat statue in the cube reaching up to it? It tells a visual story, and is engaging for people to look at. Or imagine them sitting with wicker trunks underneath them. It makes for an impressive wall display.
You've probably also seen shelving like this in bathrooms before, either screwed into the wall or attached to a wall cabinet of some sort. They're great for little decorations or even to put towels or toiletries on.
There are also the standard shelving units in closets, which are usually not as decorative as the shelves on walls, but they're just as sturdy in most cases, so long as they're put up properly (more on that later).
Wood Corner Shelves
Wood Corner Shelves
In my experience, wood corner shelves function very much like wall shelves, but they have more of a visual 'pop' to them. That's because they're built to fit right into the corner of a room, usually with a solid piece of wood that goes right into the corner that holds the entire thing up. These shelves are a great way to do something with the space that an odd corner here or there creates, because like I said, they're unusual enough to cause a person to remark when seeing them.
In my experience, corner shelves are a little unknown - enough that it's easier to find examples of them online than it is to find them in stores. Depending on where you live though, this may be different. I suggest starting online to at least get an idea of the styles you like, and if you want, then going to a store to do the shopping. But at the same time, if you see what you want on an online store, why not just get it there?
Wood Storage Shelves
This is the kind of wood shelving that I'm positive you have in your home somewhere. Good old fashioned wooden storage shelves. There's nothing bad about them, really, so long as they're installed correctly. And while this isn't a problem in most homes, if you're doing it yourself, or if it's an older apartment or building, you may just want to be sure the shelf is sturdy.
How do you do that? By making sure it isn't loose or wiggling at all. If it is, that could be a problem with the wood behind the drywall - maybe it's getting old and can't hold a screw in place anymore - or maybe the shelf itself isn't screwed tightly in, and will possibly come loose in the future. Either way, if you feel any kind of give in the shelf, try to get someone to look at it right away.
Conclusion
Wooden shelves for walls don't need to be elegant and charming, but they do need to be able to hold whatever it is you plan on keeping on it. So when choosing the shelving you want for you home, keep both design and good construction in mind, and it will do exactly what you want it to do for you.

I have a bunch of those wood corner shelves in my apartment. They don't like quite as cool as in that picture though, since my dad installed them.
I just keep some memorabilia on them. It's true that they catch the eye, because people often wander towards them to see what's on them.
I prefer acrylic shelves more than wood shelves due to they are durable and easy to maintain. The wood shelves is biodegradable and easily get fungus and bacteric infection.
