Video Game Storage

Video game storage is important, as it will help your games and your consoles last longer and be a more valuable long term investment. The biggest concern here is the potential damage to electronics from a long term exposure to the dust in the air, direct sunlight, and internal temperatures. By controlling these three factors, you will length the lifetime of your video games by years.

Two of the more common ways to store games is by keeping them in a storage bin, or by purchasing or building a video game storage rack. This article attempts to explain the long terms pros and cons to each method.

Storage bins are versatile and safe.  They will prevent sunlight from penetrating the games, and are airtight when the lid is put on, so they will keep the dust away too.  Storage bins have handles that make them easy to carry and move, and they are usually stackable and simple to put in a closet or (climate controlled) attic.  They have a lot going for them.  You can even just leave them in your gaming area so you have quick access to any of the games inside them!

However, they're not perfect.  They aren't very attractive, and so it could lead to a more cluttered look and feel of your gaming area.  It's also easy for the games inside each storage bin to get cluttered, and so the risk of breaking cases, or not being able to find a particular game, is higher than with a rack.

Video Game Storage Rack

The other option I'm looking at in this article is the video game storage rack, which organizes games in a much better way than a square bin. The storage rack makes it simple to find any game, and looks much neater as well, so it would fit into a corner of the room, or against the wall, very nicely. They're usually designed with games in mind, so any cartridge box or DVD case will fit into it well.

The only problem is it doesn't keep games as protected from the dust and the light that I mentioned earlier. Some people like to have their games out to show off to friends, or they want them on hand to play, so this is more temporary storage than long term storage. Some racks, if not built well, could also potentially tip over, causing further damage.

Conclusion

Storage containers and the video game storage rack have particular strengths and weaknesses. Be sure to do your homework before purchasing either one, to make sure you choose the correct one for your needs.

For me the second option is what I am going for, I like to see everything on display and as you say it makes it simpler to find what you are looking for without having to open storage boxes like I do now. Your article is prompting me to figure out where I can find room to install a storage rack -- that will be my main problem.

As much as I love the storage rack and it makes everything easy to find, just like being at the library, my aversion to dust would lead me to buying the storage bin.

I don't collect video games but I have zillions of CDs with scanned images (I am a photographer), they are stored in a large, decorative cardboard box. Unfortunately that doesn't keep dust out very well, so I am really intrigued by this plastic storage bins, they might fir the bill for me, SY

If you have bug problems at your house, the second option can get rather dusty and messy. The same thing goes for cases that stores book, after a while, it just looks....not as clean. One option is for looks, one option is for function. Choose whatever works for what you need the most.
