If you’re looking for high quality real wood furniture at an affordable price, you could shop until you've worn yourself out, or you could get creative and consider purchasing unfinished furniture that you would then finish yourself. With the virtually unlimited ways available to finish or otherwise decorate a piece of bare wood, it leaves you with more freedom than you might expect to be able to create your own thing. Finishing your own furniture is not as difficult as it seems and there is a sense of satisfaction that comes with finishing your own furnishings.  It can give you a higher sense of quality (assuming you know what you're doing!), greater control over the color of the furniture, and a lower price. Here are three reasons to consider unfinished furniture for your home.

Quality

One primary reason to purchased unfinished wood furniture is the difference in quality. When you purchase finished furniture, you don’t know what kind of defect the finish is covering up. At an unfinished furniture store, the quality is likely to be much higher because you’re seeing a great deal more detail in the wood grain. In addition to a better piece of furniture, you can also get a better finish. Some furniture manufacturers cut corners with the finishing process. When you buy unfinished furniture you can choose the finish and you will determine the quality of the finish work.

Color Matching

If you purchase unfinished furniture you can choose the color of the stain yourself. This way you can find a style of furniture you like and still match the finish of the other furniture in your home. If you make it a practice of purchasing unfinished furniture you can also keep track of the type and color of stain and use the same to be consistent.

Save Money

When you purchase unfinished furniture you will likely save a bit of money. Since the furniture is unfinished you can spend less, however this does not mean that the furniture is lower quality or worth less. In fact, most of the time you can get a better piece of furniture buy buying unfinished. If you look for sales you can get an even better by buying discount unfinished furniture. Just like any kind of furniture there is better quality merchandise and lower quality so be sure to compare a few different brands and stores before making a final decision. Discounted merchandise is different than cheap unfinished furniture – you want to save money but not end up with poor quality furniture.

Unfinished furniture is an outstanding value when you consider the quality of the wood. If you’ve had bad experiences with particle-board furniture that falls apart after a few years give solid wood furniture a try. Choose a finish that will match your décor and enjoy the process of finishing your own piece. Over the years you’ll enjoy the superior quality and your own craftsmanship and feel good about getting it all at a great price.

I used to work in a paint shop, and as you said unfinished furniture is ideal in those cases where you need to match the item to existing furniture. I've always found color matching to be fun. Color matching is however quite a tricky process, so it's best not to jump in too quickly and instead try painting a small area that's hidden first to see how close the paint is when it's dry and with the shade of the wood.
